Global Outreach Projects
Project KenyaSHARE began its long term relationship/partnership with the Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark and St. James Memorial Medical Center in August 2013. Through the years, we have communicated with members of the Kids Ark and St. James Clinic to develop a deeper understanding of their needs and developments. In the summer of 2015, two of our dedicated members, Monika Looney and Shawn Glisson, travelled to Kenya to visit both facilities and volunteer at the “Annual Medical Camp” that they sponsor. In addition to learning more about the work that is done by the two establishments, working at the pharmacy during the Medical Camp, and interacting with members of the Kids Ark community, Monika and Shawn set up various tools to help both the clinic and SHARE in keeping track of the influx and use of medical supplies at the clinic. Currently, SHARE is focusing on providing personalized assistance to the doctors in Kenya in order to support them in providing health care to the surrounding communities. We hope to continue providing medical supplies to the St. James Clinic as well as educational materials to the Kids Ark as our partnership flourishes.

Project NigeriaNigeria is SHARE's newest partner. The clinic we donate to is called Christian Child Care, located in Imo State, Nigeria. This is a long-running multi-faceted complex that opened in 1972. It consists of a child daycare center, an elementary school, and is currently undergoing reconstruction of its maternity ward. The maternity ward is where our supplies will be going to. We hope these supplies will help physicians give new mothers a safe delivery.

Project PanamaIn early 2014, we supplied the UMD Dental Brigades with a variety of medical supplies to take on their dental mission trip to Panama. UMD Dental Brigades set up temporary clinics to provide health care in regions of Eastern Panama where access is limited. Each clinic has stations for intake, triage, consultation, dental, charla (health education), and pharmacy. UMD Dental Brigades teams aim to “maintain relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and conduct community health worker training aimed at empowering local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of health care.” This long term relationship can be strengthened with the donation of medical supplies provided by SHARE.

Project JamaicaJamaica is where UMD’s version of SHARE began. A former UMD student volunteered at the Mandeville Clinic in Jamaica and noticed there was a need for medical supplies. Acting upon this need, he started a branch of SHARE at UMD, based on the model developed at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Our initial shipments were sent to Jamaica, with the help of a grant to assist for shipment costs.

Project VietnamSHARE has also sent supplies to the Long An Segaero General Hospital, Vietnam. Vietnam is an example of a SHARE site that was created by a SHARE member that had connections abroad. With determination, any student can initiate a donation site abroad, and SHARE will provide them with supplies and support in the process.
